ORIGINAL VINTAGE CARD
MR. MULLIGAN
The 1935 National Air Races was a one-man show, with planes designed and built
by Ben O. Howard winning the three main races. The 1935 victories were a fitting
climax to Benny Howard's racing career, which had begun in 1930 with a tiny
90-horsepower racer he called Pete. Pete was followed by the more powerful Ike
and Mike racers, and finally by Mr. Mulligan, a four-place cabin monoplane. This
graceful ship was driven by a supercharged 830-horsepower Wasp engine. Al-
though Howard, an airlines pilot, was banned from closed-course racing by his
employer, he flew Mr. Mulligan to victory in the 1935 Bendix cross-country race,
making the flight from California to Cleveland in eight and a half hours. Harold
Neumann then piloted the same plane to first place in the Thompson 15lap race,
an unprecedented double victory. To round out Howard's triumph, Neumann won
the Greve race for smaller-engined planes in the Howard Mike.
